17th Solving the Healthcare Insurance Crisis During
a Transition…What to Do When Cobra Ends or Is
Too Expensive
Healthcare insurance is absolutely
mandatory to avoiding a personal financial catastrophe
if a medical event happens. Maintaining health insurance
is also critical to being able to secure new health
insurance from a new carrier when one moves to a new
company’s benefits program.
One of the first challenges victims
of layoffs face is healthcare insurance – getting
it and paying for it. Knowing this, we at Michigan Survives,
wanted to provide you with key information on this stressful
topic.
Why is Cobra so expensive? Cobra coverage
is by law 102% of the premium cost that the former employer
was paying based on the health care coverage you maintained
while employed. Very often the job transitioner has
no idea where to go for help or other viable options
and may choose to cancel completely which can be catastrophic.
